Sports Authority made national news this past week when the company announced that it would be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The international companies to which it owes over 1.1 billion dollars include international companies such as Nike and Under Armor. In its news release Sports Authority also announced that it would be closing some stores as a result of the company’s current financial situation. Today we got news from the company that the Hiram location off Hwy 278 and GA 92 will be one of only two Georgia locations on the closure list, the other being in Lilburn. A closing date is not known at this time. We are sorry to hear about the misfortunes of an established retailer such as Sports Authority and hope that the spot it currently occupies in Hiram finds a new tenant quickly.

As a side note, we at the Douglasville Menu had contacted Sports Authority as well as several other big-name retailers last summer about the prospect of their opening a location in Douglasville one day. At the time they told us that they had no plans to do so but would look into the possibility in the future. It would now seem such an opening is on an indefinite hold as the company attempts to come out from their current financial struggle. We hope that one day it will and that it will be a better company which can begin expanding locations again.
