The Stewart House Retirement Living, a locally-owned and operated personal care home and independent retirement community, exudes a rich, southern charm that is matched by the warmth and hospitality of its staff and residents.

Located on South Street, The Stewart House, a well-known Carrollton landmark, has served as a retirement living home for the past 20 years.
“We always make sure to tell people that we’re a home, not an institution,” says Clay Cowart, caregiver. “Our residents are free to come and go as they please, and many of them are very active.”

The Stewart House features 39 different private suites and independent apartments, most of which include a private patio, kitchenette, and bathroom, as well as use of common areas. The Stewart House was constructed in the 1890’s and the original Neoclassical styled structure has remained one of Carrollton’s most attractive homes.“One of the things we really take pride in here is that we are a small, family-owned facility,” says Cowart. “We’re one of the only privately owned facilities in this area. Our staff develops close relationships with our residents and sees everyone here as one big family.”

The facility has a full kitchen and large dining area in which residents can join one another for any of the three nutritious meals served each day.
Those living in the Stewart House’s Personal Care Home are offered an attentive living setting that includes scheduling medical appointments, supervised medication, health and exercise programs, dietary planning, as well as scheduled transportation to appointments, activities, and local shopping centers. Residents can also enjoy the convenience of having an in-house hair stylist and barber shop.

“Our residents can enjoy a wide variety of activities that take place here at the Stewart House or out in the community,” says Cowart.
Residents of The Stewart House Independent Living are able to retain their independence, yet receive individualized assistance when needed from the 24-hour call response and care staff.Relatives are encouraged and invited to visit at any time, as well as take part in any events held at the facility.

“My mother lives here, and she really enjoys it,” says Linda Longley. “The staff is so friendly and welcoming—just like family to me and her. This is a home for mom, it’s her home.” Pat Stayton, 92, has lived at the Stewart House for four years. He says the facility exceeded his expectations when he visited several other similar retirement homes in the area. “When I decided to move out here, I visited a number of homes around the area, and when I came to the Stewart House, I knew this was the place,” says Stayton. “I toured other retirement homes, and this is one of the nicest ones I’ve seen. It’s a very active environment, and the owner is a good, Christian lady who promotes Christian-oriented living. There are a lot of very fine people here from all walks of life,” says Stayton. Lisa Jackson, who serves as Assistant Administrator, says working with the Stewart House is more of a ministry than anything.“This is more of a ministry than a job,” she says. “I knew early on that I wanted to be here a long time. I really enjoy working here, and all of our staff truly have a passion; we feel called to serve in this role.”

The Stewart House recently constructed a small, quaint chapel.

“The chapel will be a place for the love of God to be expressed in various ways such as ministry meetings, revival services, weddings, family reunions, etc. This chapel is fulfilling the vision the Lord gave Melissa Newbern (The Stewart House owner), which was to build a chapel to house his presence to those in need of peace, rest, and healing,” says Sabrina Hicks who is the House Manager for The Stewart House and a board member for The Chapel. To learn more about the Stewart House’s living options, visit www.thestewarthouse.info, or call 770-838-0303.
