UWG Invites Community to Veterans Day Program

The UWG Center for Adult Learners and Veterans would like to invite members of the local community to attend its annual Veterans Day Program on November 8.

“UWG’s Veterans Day ceremony is a rare chance for us to try to connect to our community,” said Danny Gourley, director of Center for Adult Learners and Veterans. “Our first priorities are our prospective and currently enrolled students, but we know we have many veterans and military-connected residents in Carrollton and the surrounding area. We want to send the message that UWG is a place that appreciates their sacrifices before coming to us and the contributions they bring to the classroom.”

The event will begin at 9 a.m., and will feature multiple speakers, including:

    • Welcome from Danny Gourley, Director of Center for Adult Learners and Veterans
    • A capella singing of the national anthem by a quartet of UWG music students
    • Message from UWG President Dr. Kyle Marrero
    • Update on the impact of military connected students at UWG by Danny Gourley
    • Reading of the poem “The Hold” by Wallace “Dusty” Rhodes (READER TBD) (WWII Navy Veteran and Carrollton resident)
    • Open invitation for audience speakers
    • Parting thoughts and invitation to reception by Danny Gourley

“My favorite part of our ceremony is the open mic time for the audience,” said Gourley. “You never know what people are going to say, but it’s always so touching to hear the stories of how veterans have affected their lives. The genuine gratitude expressed by the speakers just puts a smile on my face.”

The event will feature a reception with light refreshments following the speakers and audience comment session. The reception will be held in the Center for Adult Learners and Veterans which is located in the University Community Center, Suite 311.
