9:24PM 1/18/18 – University of West Georgia – Newnan will be CLOSED Friday, 1/19. UWG – Carrollton will be OPEN normal hours on Friday, 1/19.

6:18PM 1/18/18 – Heard County Schools will be closed on Friday, 1/19. Staff are welcome if it’s safe to drive in. No pressure to come in if it’s not.

6:18PM 1/18/18 – Paulding County Schools will be closed on Friday, 1/19. Annual employees are to report at 10:00 a.m.

Carrollton City Hall will open Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. Garbage crews will be picking up the regularly scheduled Wednesday trash Thursday.

8:36AM 1/18/18 – Due to early morning road conditions, Villa Rica City Hall and all other City administration offices will open at 12:00pm (Noon) on Thursday, January 18, 2018. Please refer back to the City’s Facebook Page and website: www.villarica.org for updates.

8:17AM 1/18/18 – City of Carrollton has treated most intersections. Cedar Street looks really good from Bankhead to College St, Rome Street is good, Streets around Adamson Square have been treated, please be careful on the hills and on Newnan Street in shaded areas. US 27, 166 Bypass, Hwy 61, Hwy 113 should be 100% after 1pm.

EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS EXPECTED TODAY AND TONIGHT… Bitterly cold temperatures have allowed snow to compact into ice across many roadways in the area. Despite ample sunshine through the day, temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing. Snow and ice will continue to be a problem on roadways today and tonight. Roads in direct sunlight today may experience some melting, however expect this to refreeze fairly quickly after sunset tonight. Widespread melting is not expected until Thursday afternoon. Travel today and tonight is not advised. If you must travel, please exercise extreme caution. Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for our area until 9:00 am. The Winter Weather Advisory relates to actual snowfall only, not travel conditions.

A State of Emergency has been declared for our area including West Georgia and East Alabama.

Current measured accumulations are 1.5 inches in Northern Carroll County, 1.9 inches near Carrollton and 1.8 inches in Douglasville. Snow accumulation amounts vary due to snow bands that moved over some areas compared to others.

Local public safety is reporting snow covered roads with a thin sheet of ice under the snow in most areas. Public Safety requests that drivers stay off the roads if at all possible. Several motor vehicle accidents have been reported throughout the area.

Current temperatures in the area range between 13-15 degrees with wind chills near or below zero. High temperatures today are forecast at 29 degrees, therefore there will not be much improvement of road conditions today Low temperatures tonight will drop to 19.

High temperatures Thursday are forecast to rise above freezing by noon Thursday so we should see improvement Thursday.

Snow continues to fall across the west Georgia area as forecasters warn residents to prepare for dangerously cold wind chills expected to move in early tomorrow morning.

The west Georgia area is still under a Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service until 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Eastern Alabama counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory through 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Under the current forecast, residents can expect to see snow accumulation totals ranging from 1- 2 Inches in East Alabama and West Georgia.  There is some concern from meteorologists about narrow bands that have started to form in East Alabama and West Georgia where temperatures have already fallen into the mid 20’s.

Some areas within these bands could possibly see as much as 3 inches of accumulating snow, but most areas will see 1-2 inches.

Brutally cold wind chills are forecasted for the area overnight tonight with wind chills possibly close to or below zero.

Travel will be impacted as roadways are expected to have patches of black ice and snow accumulation. Visibility could also be reduced due to blowing snow from the strong winds expected with this system.

Any snow that accumulates on the roadways is expected to remain until mid-morning Thursday. Temperatures in the west Georgia area are expected to stay below freezing all day Wednesday and fall back into the 20s Thursday morning.

We stepped on snow along our sidewalk and it immediately turned to ice! Any compaction of snow will result in ice. Please slow down if traveling, or stay off the roads!”

    • Dangerously Cold Wind Chills Tonight – Wednesday
    • Light snow expected across much of north/central GA beginning around midday across far NW Georgia – expanding south and east through the afternoon and evening hours.
    • Up to 1 inch generally expected across the area / Local higher amounts in the mountains of North GA.
    • Will monitor potentially higher amounts tonight along I-85 South of ATL
    • Bitterly cold wind chills (sub-zero values possible along and north/west of I-85)
    • Icy roads due to snow and initial melting tonight into Wed AM
    • Prolonged cold – sub-freezing temps expected through Thurs AM
    • City of Carrollton is pretreating bridges.
    • Carroll County Public Works are loading their salt trucks.

Carroll County 911 Director Trisha Orr urges local residents to limit travel and only contact 911 in the event of serious emergencies.

“We are hoping that people will stay off the roads [during the Winter Weather Advisory] because we don’t want the 911 lines tied up on wrecks,” said Trish Orr. “We want to keep the lines open for serious emergencies in case of people needing ambulances, or if there are any fires or things of that nature. If you have downed power lines, definitely dial 911.”
