UGA Basketball Legend Teams with Academy Sports to Award $100 Gift Cards to 13 Douglas County Students

Former University of Georgia Basketball star Shaun Golden has teamed up with Academy Sports+Outdoors to provide Douglas County students with a Golden Opportunity.

Golden and two-time Superbowl Winner Tyrone Poole presented 13 Douglas County students with a $100 gift card to Academy Sports + Outdoors. To be eligible for the gift card giveaway, students had to exhibit character growth and demonstrate achievement in their academic and personal pursuits.

“I want to put young people on the path to success. Every day we are granted a golden opportunity,” explained Golden.

School administrators ultimately selected 13 students who displayed exceptional character and accomplished predetermined goals for the school year. Students were free to select anything they wanted from a wide selection of team apparel, athletic equipment, bikes and school apparel. Golden and Poole walked alongside students, giving advice and one-on-one mentoring during their shopping trip.

“Every day we all have the opportunity to do something remarkable, or it will disappear. Through Golden Opportunity, I want to empower students to make the right choices,” noted Golden.

In addition to playing basketball at Georgia, Golden coached basketball at the collegiate level for 20 years.  Golden is a sports broadcaster and founder of Golden Opportunity, a nonprofit mentoring program he founded in 2015. The mission of Golden Opportunity is to assist students with goal setting, making good choices, achieving academic success and exhibiting exceptional sportsmanship.

Golden will bring his Golden Opportunity program to Douglas County students in the 2018-19 school year.
