STEM

(Carrollton, Ga. May 12, 2016) Villa Rica High School brought two teams to the So You Think You Can STEM Competition held May 7, 2016. Team Smart Thinking Enhanced Mentality comprised of Brian Perry, Hailey Corbin, Devin Hodges, and Logan Binney. Team Lemon included Larry Braswell, Brennan Porter, Ruben Rivendeira, and Ethan Smith. VRHS teachers Cynthia Cox and Stephanie Miles were cheerleaders and “nerds” in Charge. Teams chose three events from Design and Engineering, Technology Applications, Laboratory Skills, and Mathematics. All teams took a written Quiz Bowl test, with the top two teams competing in the live Quiz Bowl. Team Lemon won the live quiz bowl, which was a nail biter to the last buzzer. Students completed a health care challenge, testing their reflexes and measuring heart rate change, defied gravity in a race car challenge, tested their math mettle, and completed a GoggleFree research challenge. Both middle schools and high schools came together to “do” science just for the love of science.

In the end, Team Lemon won both the Quiz Bowl and the Grand Championship of the event. Winners received plaques as well as a monetary prize. We are very proud of all our competitors, and are looking forward to next year.
