Board of Commission Chairman Dr. Romona Jackson Jones presented proclamations to three graduates of Chapel Hill High School for their first place award in the Emerging Business Issues at the Future Business Leaders of America- Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference.
Myles Davis, Khalil Edmundson, and Cory Raxton qualified to compete and represent their high school on the national stage. The three graduates joined more than 12,000 of America’s brightest youth in Baltimore, Maryland for an opportunity to win over $95,000 in cash awards.
They met opportunity with preparation as they researched crowdsourcing and argued both sides of the topic in a six-minute speech in front of a panel of judges. The trio competed in the preliminary rounds against over 100 other teams across the country and then advanced as one of the top 14 finalists in the performance finals. After the final round, the Chapel Hill team placed first overall at the FBLA Awards of Excellence program.
“It is extremely revitalizing to see young emerging business leaders in Douglas County prepare, accomplish, and win a prestigious, life-changing national award,” commented Chairman Dr. Jones after meeting with the three young men and their families.
To honor the team’s significant accomplishment, Chairman Dr. Jones and County Administrator Mark Teal presented a proclamation to each young man to express their congratulations on such an extraordinary victory.
“FBLA competitive events prepare students for successful careers in business and we were very honored to have three of Douglas County’s students achieve this level of success,” said Teal.
Each graduate will be attending college in the fall to pursue degrees in business and finance. Myles Davis will be attending the University of Tennessee, Khalil Edmondson will be attending Howard University and Cory Raxton will be attending Michigan State University.
