“Mama” Becky Austin, alongside her husband, “Big Papa” Shawn Austin, recently opened a new southern kitchen in Tallapoosa. Their restaurant, Mama-N-Em’s calls back to a simple way of southern living. Together they offer a family-friendly environment to serve a variety of “tummy ticklers, sammiches, smash burgers, belly fillers, and youngin’ meals.”

Mama, who was born and raised in Tallapoosa, tells us, “As a child, I gained a lot of inspiration from my brother and mother, who has since passed. I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with my brother who worked as an executive chef at Ruth’s Chris in Atlanta. He was also a sous chef at The Pisgah Inn in Asheville, North Carolina. My mother was a custom cake maker for friends and family. In her honor, I started The Backwoods Baker which I operated for seven years and became the preferred baker for eight wedding venues in west Georgia and east Alabama.”

Now, as the owner and operator at Mama-N-Em’s, Mama spends her time greeting customers and preparing made-from-scratch foods. “All of our meals are cooked fresh daily. Nothing arrives in our kitchen frozen,” said Mama. Her favorite is Mama’s Famous Shrimp-N-Grits.

Big Papa Shawn is a Douglas County native. “We moved him out here in 2004 and he’s a good ‘ol’ boy,” said Mama.

Big Papa is proud to serve “The Big Papa” burger which is made with three quarter-pound, hand-formed and smashed patties that are grilled to perfection, topped with chuckeye steak Philly mixture, provolone and mozzarella cheese, smokey bacon, caramelized onions, and three pimento cheese poppers, on a toasted bun.

Mama and Big Papa are the parents of four children. They tell us, “We wanted to name the restaurant something that best represents the southern way of life. Earlier this year, when we were on our way home from the mountains, our oldest daughter Julie came up with the name.”

Mama-N-Em’s is located at 2754 Georgia Highway 100 South, Tallapoosa, Georgia.

Mama says, “Bring one, bring all! Come dine with us Wednesday through Sunday.”

The dining room is open from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
