SUMMARY:Broadway Classic ‘Sound of Music’
DESCRIPTION:The Carrollton Center for the Arts’ Youth Theater program and UWG’s Theater and Music departments will join forces to present this season’s spring musical, The Sound of Music, April 24 – 27.\n\n“I am honored to direct this iconic musical as a creative collaboration between the university and our dear Carrollton Arts Center,” said the show’s director, Pauline Gagnon. “This is a beloved show with unforgettable songs that I know audiences of all ages will enjoy.”\n\nRogers and Hammerstein’s 1959 Tony Award-winning Broadway production is based on the 1949 memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Set in Austria in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children’s widowed father, Captain von Trapp and he and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children. Many songs from the musical have become standards, including Do-Re-Mi, My Favorite Things, Edelweiss, Climb Ev’ry Mountain and the title song, The Sound of Music.\n\n“For many, this is the production that helped people create a love for musical theater,” said Arts Center Manager Tim Chapman.  “The story, the music, the setting were captivating and appealed to all ages. My mother always made it a priority to watch the musical when it aired on television. I believe this was Rogers and Hammerstein’s greatest work.”\n\nThe production is sponsored by Milestone Investments.\n\nTickets for the performance are $20 for adults, $10 for youth and are on sale at the center’s box office or online at carrolltonarts.com.\n\nWhat: The Sound of Music\nWhen: April 24 – 26, 7:30pm / April 26 and 27, 2pm\nWhere: Carrollton Center for the Arts\n\n
