Coweta Students Continue to Outpace State and National SAT Averages in 2024

The Coweta County School System’s average composite SAT score for the graduating class of 2024 was 1062, placing participating Coweta students well above state and national averages on the college entrance exam.

Coweta Schools’ average SAT performance increased to 67 points above the national SAT average and 32 points above the state average on the college entrance exam.  It was the seventh year in a row that Georgia students outscored the national average on the SAT, and the tenth year that Coweta students in turn outscored both state and national averages.

Though Coweta County’s reported overall SAT score of 1062 is lower than last year’s reported county average of 1068, state and national scores showed larger decreases this year, indicating changes in the test and the way the average test scores are reported.

The College Board’s annual SAT report now presents data only on students in the class of 2024 who took the SAT during high school, SAT takers are counted only once, and only their most recent score is included.

This year, system-wide performance on the SAT college entrance exam placed the Coweta County School System in about the top 14 percent of mean SAT scores among the 182 Georgia school districts reporting in 2024.

“We are very proud of our students and teachers for this level of performance,” said Coweta Superintendent Evan Horton.

“Our schools remain well above the state and national averages on the SAT,” said Horton.  “That speaks to the good work our schools are doing pre-K through 12th grade, and it speaks to the competitiveness and college readiness of our graduates.”

“We are excited to see that our focus on math and literacy across the district continues to benefit students,” said Coweta County School System Instructional Services Director Chase Puckett.  “These scores are the result of solid instruction taking place in all of our schools, from kindergarten through high school.”

Northgate posted the highest average SAT score in the county among its 2024 graduates, at 1090, and all three Coweta high schools outscored both state and national SAT averages.  2024 SAT averages for Coweta’s three high schools were:

Reporting released by the College Board and the Georgia Department of Education shows test results for 2024 graduates on the SAT’s Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math sections of the test.  The test is scaled between 400 and 1600 points, and the above scores above represent data for students in the graduating class of 2024 who took the SAT at any point during high school.

Coweta’s mean SAT score decreased 6 points in 2024, from 1068 in 2023. Georgia students’ mean score decreased 15 points compared to 2023, when the state mean was 1045.  The national mean score decreased 8 points, from 1003 in 2023

Coweta County School System’s high school students recorded a mean score of 548 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) portion of the assessment, an increase of 1 point over 2023, and decreased 7 points on the math portion of the exam, to 515 in 2024.

Georgia’s public-school class of 2024 recorded a mean score of 527 on Reading and Writing, and a mean score of 503 on the math portion. That’s compared to averages of 507 and 488, respectively, for students in the nation’s public schools graduating in 2024.

“I am so proud of the class of 2024 and their teachers, parents, families, and the communities who supported them,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “We continue to see Georgia students outpacing the national average on the SAT and ACT and that’s a testament to the work we’ve done in Georgia to invest in our students’ academic recovery post-pandemic and create opportunities in our public schools that prepare every child for life.”

The Georgia Department of Education reported that SAT test participation among Georgia’s 2024 graduating classes increased, which sometimes leads to moderate drops in performance – 52 percent of Georgia’s class of 2024 took the SAT at some point during high school, compared to 50 percent of the class of 2023.
