Event Details

Carrollton Center for the Arts kicks off the Christmas season with an original production of The Nutcracker Ballet. The production features more than 90 local dancers from area studios, including the center’s ballet program, performing alongside guest dancers in principal roles. Carrollton’s Nutcracker presents the classic story, which dates back to the ballet’s premiere in 1892, but the costumes, scenery, props and set pieces were custom designed and selected specifically for Carrollton’s production.

“Tchaikovsky’s score is iconic, that is never going to change,” said Arts Superintendent Tim Chapman. “We are excited to put our unique touch on this beloved holiday performance, and to create a new tradition that is sure to delight our community for years to come.”

Director Jurijs Safonovs, who received his ballet training in Latvia, brings his vast knowledge of dance to this performance. His vision and original choreography help make Carrollton’s rendition of The Nutcracker altogether magical. “I’m very happy to launch this performance in Carrollton,” said Safonovs. “Our team is fantastic. Everyone is so creative and enthusiastic, our backdrops, sets and costumes are breathtaking, and the lighting and special effects are stunning. I cannot wait to see it all come together.”

The ballet was adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. A quick synopsis: At the annual Christmas Eve party at the Stahlbaum’s house, the young daughter, Clara, receives a nutcracker from her uncle. After the party, Clara falls into a deep sleep and dreams of a battle with the Rat King, journeys into a land of sweets and meeting a handsome prince.

The Nutcracker will be the second full-length production for the Center for the Arts’ ballet program.
