(Carrollton, Ga. – June 18, 2015) Providence Elementary School hosted the first annual PES STEM Conference on June 15 and 16. The conference was designed to help prepare teachers to implement STEM in their classrooms. Scott Cowart, superintendent of Carroll County Schools welcomed teachers and administrators from five counties (Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Heard, Muskogee) as they gathered together for two days of learning sessions led by informative speakers. Local educators, Rhonda Stapleton, Christina Gilham, Martha Milam, and Cheryl Nicolls shared information about integrating STEM in the classrooms across content areas. Community business partners, Joel Gray from Southwire and Steve Cavanaugh from Prinkpack, spoke about schools partnering with businesses to promote STEM. Participants were also motivated by Peter Ulrich, principal of the STEM Academy in Savannah, Amanda Fox, teacher at the STEM Academy, Paul Solarz, 5th grade teacher in Westgate Elementary School in Arlington Heights, Illinois and author of “Learn Like a Pirate.”
Participants attended the conference free of charge, receiving breakfast, lunch, t-shirts, and door prizes, in addition to valuable information about STEM. The information from each presentation can be accessed on the Providence Elementary website pes.carrollcountyschools.com.
