The Coweta County Board of Education is preparing to adopt new academic-year calendars for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years and is inviting public comment on the calendars.
Two versions of calendars for both school years are available for review on the Coweta County School System website (www.cowetaschools.net) and below.
An online survey is also available for public comment on school calendars and for the school system’s holiday schedule. That survey can be found linked on the school system’s website (and here), and will be available through November 3.
The first calendar option is similar to the current school calendar. The second calendar option differs by shortening some breaks:
Option 1 – Closely follows the calendar used by the school system in recent years. A full week Thanksgiving Break and a Christmas and New Year’s Break of at least two weeks (10-plus days) is scheduled. School would start Wednesday, August 2, in 2023.
Option 2 – Differs by shortening the Christmas/New Year’s Break. School would start Monday, August 7, in 2023.
The proposed calendars follow the format used by the Coweta County School System for the last several years. Both calendar options maintain 180 days of student instruction, divided into two 90-day semesters, (or 89/91 days or 88/92 days). The first semester concludes before the start of holidays in December to allow for high school course completion and final exams prior to the Christmas and New Year’s break.
In addition to the above, the calendars also include:
A Labor Day holiday (a Monday holiday)
A mid-October student holiday (teacher workday and a Monday holiday)
A Thanksgiving holiday (full week)
A Christmas and New Year’s holiday (varying lengths)
A Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. holiday
A Mid-winter holiday in February (full week)
A Spring holiday in April (full week)
School-year end before Memorial Day
Two Teacher Work Days in March serve as possible inclement weather days in case of school closures that require student make-ups. They would be used as teacher workdays/student holidays otherwise.
The survey asks respondents for their preferences between the two proposed calendar versions, as well as their preferences on school system holidays and other thoughts that should be considered in adopting new school calendars. Public input will be taken through November 3. The board anticipates adopting a new cycle of school calendars at their November regular board meeting.
