Bremen City Schools Intent to Opt Out of Homestead Exemption

The City of Bremen Board of Education has announced its intent to opt out of the adjusted base year ad valorem homestead exemption established by HB 581. The opt out process will proceed according to guidelines outlined by state law, with the Board formally notifying the
Office of the Georgia Secretary of State of its decision no later than March 1, 2025. The intent to opt out is primarily focused on ensuring Bremen City Schools retains local autonomy over property tax rates and funding necessary to maintain the district’s high standards of education.

The legislation, while designed to provide property tax relief, could result in significant funding reductions for local school systems, potentially impacting classroom instruction, teacher retention, and school programs. Opting out of the exemption will allow the locally elected Board of Education to continue making financial decisions that align with the needs and priorities of the Bremen community, one that expects the highest quality education at a reasonable cost to homeowners and businesses.

“I am fortunate to work for a Board that has a longstanding commitment to maintaining the highest standards of academic and program excellence while keeping costs for local homeowners and businesses below the state average. Our Board consistently upholds a local millage rate lower than the state average, ensuring exceptional value for our community. I challenge anyone to find a better-quality education for the cost—whether public or private. Bremen City Schools is a testament to the success of local Board control.” -Shannon Christian, Superintendent

The Board encourages all concerned citizens to participate in public hearings to provide input on this important matter. Public hearings will be held at the Bremen City Schools Board of Education, located at 501 Pacific Avenue, Bremen, GA 30110, on the following
dates and times:

  • Friday, January 17, 2025, at 7:00 a.m.
  • Friday, January 24, 2025, at 11:30 a.m.
  • Monday, February 3, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
The Board of Education values community feedback and is committed to transparency
    throughout this process.
