Tanner Health First in Region to Offer Cutting-Edge da Vinci 5 Surgical Robot

Tanner is bringing the future of surgery to the community as the first hospital system in the region to introduce the da Vinci 5, the latest in robotic-assisted surgical technology from Intuitive Surgical. This innovative system enhances precision, improves patient outcomes and makes surgery less invasive — helping patients heal faster.

Now available at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, the da Vinci 5 gives surgeons better control and accuracy during procedures. One of its biggest advancements is force feedback technology, which lets doctors feel and measure the pressure they’re applying, reducing unnecessary force and improving patient safety.

The system also offers high-definition 3D imaging, steadier movements and an ergonomic design to help surgeons perform at their best. With computing power 10,000 times greater than its predecessors — the da Vinci X and the da Vinci Xi — the da Vinci 5 allows for virtual reality training and provides AI-assisted analytics, helping doctors refine their techniques and improve care.

Since 2013, Tanner has performed more than 3,400 robotic-assisted procedures using advanced systems like the da Vinci X and da Vinci Xi. The addition of the da Vinci 5 builds on this legacy, offering even greater precision for procedures like colon, gallbladder and hernia surgeries, as well as certain gynecological and urological procedures.

“Bringing this level of surgical innovation to our community means better outcomes, faster recoveries and a higher level of care for our patients,” said Megan Grilliot, MD, an obstetrician and gynecologist with Tanner Healthcare for Women and chairperson of Tanner’s robotics steering committee. “With the da Vinci 5, we can see more, feel more and operate with even greater precision, enhancing both patient safety and experience.”

In addition to its advanced features, the da Vinci 5 streamlines surgery by combining essential tools into one system, allowing surgeons to adjust settings directly from the console for a smoother, more efficient process.

“This is an exciting milestone for Tanner and for surgical care in our region,” Dr. Grilliot added. “Our investment in the da Vinci 5 underscores our commitment to offering world-class health care close to home.”

With this cutting-edge technology, Tanner continues to lead the way in surgical excellence, ensuring patients have access to the most advanced, minimally invasive procedures available.
