Five Carrollton High School students who were nominated to compete at the state level for Governor’s Honors have cleared the next hurdle by being named semifinalists.
The Governor’s Honors Program, known as GHP, is a four-week residential summer program for gifted and talented rising high school juniors and seniors. Students who attend public, private, and home schools are eligible for nomination in one of more than 20 subject areas.
Samantha Berg, Will Brewer, Julia Hume, Luis Marti Reyes and Presley McLaren will represent CHS as the remaining five nominees out of the sixteen students selected to participate. Samantha and Presley will compete in Social Studies, Will in Computer Science, Julia in Visual Arts, and Luis in World Languages with a focus in Spanish.
Shae Holland, the counselor in charge of guiding students through the nomination process, shared it has been a joy to work with these students as they showcase their talents.
“These students are passionate about their interests, and each brings unique gifts to the table,” she said. “They have worked extremely hard through each round of GHP, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
The students will now prepare for state, which includes an application and personal interview process. GHP finalists will be announced this spring and the program will be held June 15 through July 12 at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
