The National Weather Service (NWS) held a Special Weather Briefing today to address the potential for a significant severe weather outbreak expected across the region from Saturday evening into Sunday morning. Residents in East Alabama and West Georgia should prepare for dangerous weather conditions, including damaging winds, tornadoes, large hail, and flash flooding.

Forecast Overview

Severe storms are expected to begin early this evening in East Alabama and move into West Georgia later tonight. The highest risk for severe weather is anticipated at the following times:

  • East Alabama: 6:00 p.m. and onward
  • West Georgia: 8:00 p.m. and onward

Primary Storm Threats

  • Widespread damaging winds between 60 and 80 mph
  • Strong, long-track tornadoes possible
  • Hail larger than one inch in diameter
  • Heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding, with the highest risk in North Georgia

Potential Hazards

The NWS has placed East Alabama and West Georgia under a Moderate Risk (Level 4 of 5) for severe weather. The most significant hazards include:

  • Strong, long-track tornadoes are probable
  • Widespread damaging winds between 60 and 80 mph
  • Hail up to one inch in diameter
  • Frequent lightning strikes

Timing of Peak Severe Weather

The timing of the most dangerous weather conditions may vary slightly based on storm development, but the primary window for severe storms is:

  • East Alabama and northwest Georgia, including Haralson County: 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (Residents should remain alert from 6:00 p.m. onward.)
  • West Georgia, including Carroll County: 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

Hazard Potential

Tornadoes: The risk of strong EF-2 or greater tornadoes is significantly elevated for East Alabama and West Georgia. The likelihood of seeing a tornado in this region is estimated to be 25 to 50 times higher than average for this time of year.

Damaging Winds: Widespread winds of at least 60 mph are expected, with localized gusts reaching up to 80 mph. These conditions increase the potential for downed trees and power lines, creating a heightened risk for power outages and structural damage.

Precautionary Measures

Residents in the affected areas should stay updated on weather alerts, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and ensure they have a safe place to take shelter if necessary. The period of greatest concern will be from Saturday evening through early Sunday morning. Emergency preparedness is crucial as conditions could deteriorate quickly.
