The City of LaGrange honored LaGrange Employee Alton West for his 30 years of dedicated service at the recent City Council meeting.
West began his career with the City as a police officer with the LaGrange Police Department in 1988, soon becoming the department’s first DARE officer. In 1992, he was promoted to Instructor in LPD’s Training Division and achieved the rank of Sergeant by the end of 1994. In 1995, City Manager Tom Hall recognized his exceptional organizational and communications skills, appointing him as his Administrative Assistant and assigning duties to oversee the Municipal Court.
West left the City to become the Executive Director of Neighborhood Housing Services. In this role, Alton tried to address the housing needs of LaGrange’s low and moderate-income families. When the City absorbed the NHS operation in 2005, he rejoined the City and was promoted to Director of Community Development.
Over the years, Alton’s responsibilities expanded to include managing building inspections and permitting, overseeing occupational tax collections and licensing, and supervising city-owned leased facilities. He also became a community leader through regular City Week interviews with local residents, officials, and business leaders.
West graduated from Troup High School in 1982 and earned a degree in Business Administration from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
