Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Awards Grant To UWG

The University of West Georgia is pleased to announce it has received a grant of more than $9,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).

The grant will help educate and empower young adults to make safe choices on and off the road and is in effect from October 2025 through September 2026.

“Innovative projects like this are designed with the intent for Georgia and our nation to reach the realistic goal of zero traffic deaths by the middle of this century,” said Allen Poole, GOHS director. “Each life saved on our roads is one less family that will have to live with the pain of losing a loved one whose life was taken from them in a traffic crash that was completely preventable”

UWG’s program promotes education and awareness to young adults about highway safety issues, including underage drinking, impaired driving, destructive decisions and other high-risk behaviors, in order to decrease crashes, injuries and fatalities. This is achieved by training peer-educators, providing educational programs to the schools, and funding students to participate in area, state and national highway safety related conferences.

GOHS’s mission is to educate the public on safe driving behaviors and implement highway safety campaigns and programs designed to reduce crashes and eliminate fatalities and injuries on Georgia roads.
