Tanner Health is once again taking bold steps to improve access to care across west Georgia and east Alabama, breaking ground on the next chapter in health care for Villa Rica and the region.
Tanner hosted a groundbreaking celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica, inviting employees, local leaders, government officials and area residents to commemorate the start of construction on a four-story, 74,000-square-foot expansion.
The project is the latest step in the organization’s ongoing mission to redefine care and offer additional services for patients across the region.
“More than 30 years ago, we shared a vision to make Villa Rica a center for exceptional medical care,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health. “Today, that vision continues as we embark on the hospital’s largest expansion and our mission to redefine care for patients across the region. Throughout those years, we’ve built state-of-the-art facilities that have allowed us to provide a higher level of health care in our community — from behavioral health care to advanced emergency and acute care services and robust women’s services — and we’re still growing.”
The new addition will add more than 25 inpatient beds and feature three floors dedicated solely to serving women. Highlights include newborn and continuing care nurseries, additional labor and delivery rooms, a new C-section room and expanded postpartum, imaging and outpatient OB-GYN services.
“This expansion marks an even greater commitment to women’s care in Villa Rica, helping us fulfill our mission to meet the needs of a thriving community with the space, services and providers to deliver care close to home for generations to come,” added Howard.
The project builds on recent improvements across Tanner’s system — including the three-story patient tower now underway at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton — as part of a coordinated effort to expand access and capacity for the region’s growing population.
“Nearly 40 years ago, local leaders in Villa Rica saw that the community’s hospital would be stronger through partnership — and that partnership with Tanner has proven itself time and again,” said Daniel Jackson, the chairman of Tanner’s Board of Directors. “From its first 40-bed hospital to the growth of its mental health, heart care and senior services, every expansion has reflected our shared vision for better care. At a time when many hospitals in Georgia are closing, this project stands as proof of what collaboration, faith and commitment can achieve when a community and its health system work together.”
The project will also include new infrastructure to support heating, cooling and emergency power for the facility — essential systems that ensure continuity of care for patients and staff.
“This expansion is more than new walls and equipment — it’s about what it means for families here and across the region,” said Leslie McPherson, the mayor of Villa Rica. “For mothers, fathers and children, it means having the care they need just minutes from home. It means safety, access and peace of mind. As our city grows, Tanner continues to be a true partner investing in the health and well-being of every family who calls Villa Rica home.”
All Tanner practices on campus in Villa Rica will remain open throughout construction for the convenience of patients and visitors.
To keep the community informed and gather feedback during the project, Tanner has launched a dedicated webpage attanner.org/construction. The site provides regular updates, maps and important information for patients, visitors and staff.
