The University of West Georgia has reached a new milestone this fall, welcoming 16,072 students – the largest enrollment in its history. This achievement reflects the university’s continued momentum in delivering high-impact academic experiences and expanding access to higher education.
The latest data from the University System of Georgia (USG) shows that UWG achieved the highest percentage increase in enrollment among the system’s 26 institutions this year, highlighting several areas of growth:
- Total Enrollment: UWG’s student body grew by 11.7 percent over last year’s total of 14,394, reinforcing the university’s appeal to students across Georgia and beyond.
- Graduate Programs: Enrollment in graduate programs climbed to 5,997 students, a 14.5 percent increase from Fall 2024. This growth underscores UWG’s commitment to preparing professionals for leadership roles in a dynamic workforce.
- Retention: The university’s first-year retention rate rose to 77.8 percent, continuing an upward trend and demonstrating the effectiveness of student support initiatives.
- Dual Enrollment: Participation in dual enrollment programs surged to 2,048 students, a 33.9 percent increase, thanks in large part to partnerships in the Go West Early program.
As UWG celebrates its largest student body ever, Dr. Michael Johnson, UWG’s president, is emphasizing the importance of turning access into achievement.
“Student success is a no-excuse priority at the University of West Georgia,” Johnson said. “Welcoming more students than ever before – 16,072 this fall – is a powerful reminder of the trust our students and their families place in us. That trust comes with responsibility. Every initiative, every investment, every decision we make must help our students succeed, graduate on time, and thrive beyond UWG.”
That commitment to success is reflected in the university’s academic strategy, which continues to evolve to meet the needs of a growing and diverse student population.
“This level of growth is both exciting and energizing,” said Dr. Jon Preston, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “It challenges us to innovate how we teach, support and engage students. Our faculty and academic leaders are focused on ensuring that every student – whether on campus, online, or dual-enrolled – has access to a rigorous, relevant, and personalized learning experience that prepares them for life after graduation.”
