A potentially tragic incident had a positive outcome thanks to the training, quick thinking and heroic actions of a Carroll Electric Membership Cooperative (EMC) employee.
In recognition of his life-saving efforts, Matt Young, Manager of Safety, Training and Loss Control at Carroll EMC, was honored with a Lifesaving Award by Georgia EMC during the state association’s annual meeting on November 10 in Savannah.
On November 14, 2024, while driving home from work, Young noticed vehicles swerving to avoid something in the road. As he got closer, he realized it was a man lying motionless in the roadway.
Without hesitation, Young turned his vehicle around and stopped to assist. The individual was unconscious and bleeding from a head injury. Young quickly assessed the situation and worked alongside his wife, who happened to be passing by, as well as another good samaritan, to stabilize the man. Together, they controlled the bleeding and ensured the individual was cared for until first responders arrived.
Thanks to their swift intervention, the individual received the critical medical attention needed to survive. Weeks later, Young saw the man at a local store and was relieved to see that he had fully recovered.
Young was one of 20 employees from nine EMCs across Georgia honored with the Lifesaving Award this year. The award is given to EMC employees whose swift actions and decision-making are instrumental in protecting others from dangerous or life-threatening situations.
