WGTC veteran students, faculty, and staff march in the Douglas County Veterans Day Parade, celebrating and supporting those who served.
West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) recognized veterans this year with a series of campuswide events and community involvement for Veterans Day. The college, which serves 240 veteran students, faculty, and staff, as well as 203 military dependents, demonstrated its ongoing commitment to supporting those who have served through both recognition and year-round resources.
In celebration of Veterans Day, WGTC hosted events on each campus where veterans enjoyed refreshments and received a WGTC Challenge Coin in appreciation of their service. The observance also coincided with Military Family Appreciation Month, highlighting the college community’s gratitude for military-connected families.
“WGTC is proud to support our veteran students and their families,” said Charlotte Ayres, Veterans Affairs Specialist. “We recognize the sacrifices made by military families and are committed to showing our appreciation.”
WGTC also participated in the Douglas County Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 8, with representation from the Veterans Affairs department and veteran students, faculty, and staff. “Participating in community events strengthens the bond between the college, the community, and our students,” Ayres said. “It provides an opportunity to recognize and support veterans both on campus and in the community.”
Following the parade, WGTC hosted a picnic at its Douglas Campus for veterans and their families. Guests enjoyed food, games, and camaraderie, with meals provided by D&N Backyard BBQ. The picnic offered a relaxed atmosphere for veterans to socialize and also highlighted the ongoing support WGTC provides to military-affiliated students, reflecting the college’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment where veterans can thrive academically and personally.
For veterans interested in returning to school, WGTC offers personalized support with education benefits, guidance through the financial aid process, and resources to enhance the college experience. Veterans are encouraged to reach out by phone, email, or by visiting any campus to learn more and get assistance with applying and enrolling.
“Many times, the greatest obstacle is taking the first step,” Ayres said. “WGTC is here to help guide veterans through the enrollment process and determine eligibility for education benefits.”
