Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire

The following is a paid advertorial from The Whorton Agency of Carrollton, Georgia

….. Did you say open fire?

Christmas time is here, a time for joy and cheer. So, don’t let the unexpected catch you off guard and ruin your Holiday fun.

Hosting for the holidays can be an exciting and joyous time to spend with friends and family. What could go wrong?

This is definitely something we overlook as we prep the sugar cookies, mix the hot cocoa, and set out our reindeer food on the lawn, awaiting Santa’s arrival.

However, as much as we want to overlook this aspect, the truth is, we are not guaranteed that everything will go just right. In fact, especially during the holidays, as people crowd around and sing by the fireplace, our homeowners’ liability comes into play more than one might wish.

Picture this: Christmas dinner is being served, the kids are decorating their cookies, and the house fills with the smell of pine and a burning fire.

Does the smell of pine and a burning fire sound familiar? Like a Griswold Family Christmas? Well, that scene is all too familiar, especially during the holidays. So let’s deck the halls, safely.

Before you roast those chestnuts by the fireplace, make sure it’s properly cared for and inspected during the winter months. Use a screen to prevent sparks from jumping out, especially when little ones or pets wander nearby. And remember, a fireplace should never be left unattended, even for a quick “I just need to check the oven” moment.

Let’s also keep your Christmas tree from looking like this Griswold Family Christmas Tree….. you know, keeping the tree and the cats safe. Whether your tree is real or pre-lit, both can create hazards if not handled properly. Real trees need watering daily to prevent dry, brittle branches that can ignite in seconds. Keep your tree away from heat sources like space heaters, radiators, or that beautiful but risky fireplace glow. For artificial trees, inspect lights and wiring before plugging them in. One faulty bulb or frayed wire can turn into The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Even a minor guest injury (like a sprained ankle or a burn from brushing too close to a hot surface) can fall under your homeowner’s liability, so prevention truly is the best gift you can give. Before you host, take a moment to review your policy’s liability limits. Knowing you’re covered allows you to focus on what truly matters: laughing, reconnecting, and celebrating safely with the people you love.

Wishing you a joyous and safe holiday season!
