The Newnan Carnegie Library is pleased to announce it is part of an upcoming statewide campaign to encourage people to visit Carnegie Libraries across Georgia.
“We are so proud of our historic Carnegie Library,” shared Carnegie Director Susan Crutchfield. “The rich history of Carnegie Libraries in the State of Georgia is something to be celebrated and explored. We are thrilled to offer this exciting program to our community members and people throughout the state.”
Georgia Public Library Service has created a guide to encourage communities to explore the Carnegie buildings still operating as public libraries in the state, as well as those serving new functions in their communities. Through the Carnegie Library Trail in Georgia, visitors will learn more about these libraries and their history. Those interested in participating may download and print a booklet from georgialibraries.org/Carnegie or request one at the Newnan Carnegie Library (1 LaGrange Street).
Industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated more than $40 million between 1881-1918 to build 1,679 U.S. library buildings. These distinctive buildings play an important role in this country’s cultural heritage. The libraries also expanded access to education and information, and they played an important role in establishing libraries as essential civic institutions in our communities. 30 Carnegie libraries were built in Georgia. 24 remain standing, and of those, eight still operate as public libraries. Many have significant original features remaining and have been restored.
