Four Carrollton High School seniors have been recognized as National Merit Commended Students: Evan Brookings, Tyler Clotfelter, Hoyt Herman, and Lyla Purkey.
Carrollton High School seniors Evan Brookings, Tyler Clotfelter, Hoyt Herman, and Lyla Purkey have been named Commended Students in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, announced earlier this week. Each was presented with a Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program.
Being recognized for their exceptional academic promise are a total of about 34,000 Commended Students nationwide. These honorees are among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2026 competition by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
All four seniors are accomplished scholars who consistently seek out Carrollton High’s most rigorous coursework, balancing challenging classes with diverse extracurricular passions, leadership roles, and community involvement.
“Evan, Tyler, Hoyt, and Lyla exemplify the ‘Gold Standard’ through their dedication, intellectual curiosity, and hard work,” said CHS Principal Dr. Eric Simmons. “To achieve national recognition among the top test-takers in the country is a monumental accomplishment, and we are proud to celebrate their success as National Merit Commended Students.”
