A dedicated supporter of the University of West Georgia who has played a pivotal role in establishing UWG’s presence in Newnan has now deepened his impact on the institution by establishing a scholarship in memory of his wife.
Bob Coggin, an emeritus member of the UWG Foundation Board of Trustees, has established the Millie Coggin Endowed Scholarship, to be awarded to students from Coweta County who are attending UWG Newnan.
Coggin’s ties to UWG are profound. He dedicated his service to the UWG Newnan Advisory Board during the campus’s inception, and his grandson proudly graduated from UWG. Coggin’s passion for education and community development has not only inspired but also ignited a ripple effect, encouraging others to join him in his journey.
“My wife, Millie, was a strong advocate for education, and establishing this scholarship in her honor is a meaningful way to continue her legacy of supporting students,” said Coggin. “I have seen firsthand the impact that UWG has had on our community, and I am proud to be a part of its growth and success.”
Coggin’s work ethic and commitment to service were instilled in him at a young age. Growing up on a farm, he learned the value of hard work and dedication from his father. After being discharged from the Air Force, Coggin began his career at Delta Air Lines as a baggage handler. He worked his way up through the ranks and retired from Delta as the executive vice president of marketing and technology.
Coggin summarizes his years of experiences in his book “Flying High Over the Cotton Field” which was recently selected to be displayed at the 2024 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.
“My father taught me the importance of hard work and perseverance, values that have guided me throughout my career,” said Coggin. “I am grateful for the opportunities I have had, and I am honored to give back to the community that has given me so much.”
Coggin’s involvement with UWG began after learning about the main campus in Carrollton. He was inspired to bring a similar educational opportunity to his own city, believing in UWG’s leadership and their commitment to stimulating the growth of UWG Newnan.
In addition to the Millie Coggin Endowed Scholarship, Coggin has generously contributed to various initiatives at UWG, including the UWG Student GAP Funding Support, General Scholarship Fund, West Georgia Annual Fund, Presidential Gala, and Newnan Building Fund.
“Mr. Coggins’ dedication and support have made a significant impact on the lives of students and the community, furthering our capacity to transform lives through education,” said Allyson Bretch ’14, UWG’s interim vice president for university advancement and interim CEO of the university’s philanthropic foundations. “We are grateful to have supporters who continue to share their time, talent and treasure with us as we curate a first-choice university at UWG.”
