Mary Lois Griffis is Named Vince Dooley Award Winner

Central High School senior Mary Lois Griffis received the Vincent J. Dooley Scholarship. As a recipient of the Athletes for a Better World scholarship, Mary Lois will receive $1,000 annually while attending college.

Each year Georgia high school athletic directors nominate one male and one female athlete to be honored by the Vincent J. Dooley Scholarship Program. The Dooley Awards are named in honor of Vince Dooley, a man who embodies all the characteristics of an athlete and role model of excellence The Vincent J. Dooley Awards are present to one senior male and one senior female from Georgia high schools for their character and leadership both on and off the field and for their contributions to sports and society. 

To receive the Dooley Award the athlete must train with discipline and a consistent work ethic. The athlete must demonstrate fair play and superior sportsmanship, develop positive, supportive relationships with teammates and coaches, and win or lose with grace and dignity. The athlete must make a significant difference in their community and world.

Mary Lois is STAR Student for Central High School and Carroll County Schools as she earned the highest score on the SAT. She was named the 2024 Carson Scholar and was awarded the Scholar Athlete Award at Central High School’s Honors & Awards Night. She has been an active member of the student council, Beta Club, National Honor Society, Interact Club and the 2nd period puzzle club. She is a member of the varsity girl’s tennis team, varsity competition cheer team, and math team. She has committed to Samford University where she will be cheering for the Samford University Bulldogs and she was accepted into the University Fellows honors program.

She is the daughter of Melissa and Jared Griffis of Newnan.
