From Inside Carroll Publication : The Carrollton Civic Woman’s Club has begun a project to place small library houses called “My Book Spot” in underserved locations all over Carroll County. These houses will be white with big black spots on them – Dalmatian style! We plan to fill the libraries with new and gently used children’s books for birth to 17 year olds. Our goal is to provide books to those families who often do not have access to books and reading materials in their homes and to encourage children to read. These libraries will be set up on a take a book, leave a book system.
Just as the Little Free Libraries in downtown Carrollton have provided easy access to books for many people who might not go to the public library, we hope that the “My Book Spot” Libraries will provide children with new access to books.
We have begun putting out the word to collect children’s books for these libraries. We anticipate the each library will contain about 40 books and serve a community of 60-80 children. We have chosen 12 locations to begin and have had several people and a Boy Scout Troup volunteer to build the libraries. The College and Career Academy has offered to help us with signage, printing, and marketing. Our goal is to begin installation in May and June. Our initial locations are listed below. Some of these are still being finalized.
Once the libraries are installed and stocked with books – approximately 600 books needed to start – someone will be responsible for monitoring each one and restocking as needed. We anticipate that some of these libraries will require an additional 30-40 books per week. All the books will be labeled with the “My Book Spot” identification.
We have already begun conversations with the Regional Library, the Chamber, the municipalities in the county, with several clubs, with the schools, and with businesses. Everyone we talk to is excited about this project and wants to support our efforts. We hope this will grow and we will see little library houses sprout up in neighborhoods all over Carroll County!
We welcome all community assistance in this county wide project to get books into the hands of our children! Please drop off books at the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, 200 Northside Drive, Carrollton or call Laura Miller to arrange for pickups.
