A Veteran’s Day Dedication To My Grandfather

I dedicate this Veteran’s Day (11/11/14) to my Grandfather, Eugene Pickard who suddenly passed away a little over 2 months ago. Mr. Pickard who I called Papa was drafted at 18 years old to serve in Germany during WWII. During this time he helped his fellow warriors as a nurse for the Army Nurse corps. Many times he was sent to the hospital where he administered injections and cared for the wounded. I see my grandfather as a hero just like any other Veteran that has served this country with honor. A few years ago Papa had the opportunity to board a Flight of Honor to Washington, DC. He flew from Greensboro, NC to DC with a group of Veterans. These flights were created to honor American’s veterans for all their sacrifices. The trip allows each veteran to reflect at the memorials. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 640 WWII veterans die each day. I am so glad my grandfather had the opportunity to visit these wonderful memorials before he died. I never had the chance to take Papa to the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park which is located off Highway 16 near the Jail. This weekend I sat and reflected for a few moments in the quietness of the area. Today I challenge each one of you that are reading this article to do something today for a Veteran. Whether it is a store wide discount, a firm handshake and a thank you, a conversation, or a visit to the Trinka Davis Veterans Village off 180 Martin Drive, I hope that you are moved by the importance of today. Thank you Veterans. – Jonathan Dockery
