Planning Underway for Downtown Streetscape Project

Broad St is our Main St…soon to get a makeover.

This past week we learned of a new project in the planning stages for Downtown Douglasville. Construction documents show a new streetscape project that is in the design phase and is expected to begin late this year or early in 2016. The project scope includes the renovation of the Downtown Welcome Center at the entrance to O’Neal Plaza. It also includes a new streetscape for Broad St (Hwy 78/5/8). If Broad St is downtown’s Main Street, O’Neal Plaza is almost certainly the front door to our wonderful historic district. The project is also in conjunction with the Hwy 92 Relocation project. When the new Highway opens in 2018, the Dallas Hwy/Campbellton St Crossing over the CSX tracks will be closed permanently. A new crossing for downtown will be constructed in front of O’Neal plaza and McCarley St. The streetscape appears to be an enhancement of the interchange and the redeveloping of the Campbellton St Intersection with Broad St.  Since the project is still in design phase, the length of the project is still unknown, meaning we still don’t know if the project is just the intersection enhancements, or the entire Downtown stretch of Broad St will be included. When the final plans are released, we will have it for you here.
