The Douglas County Board of Commissioners took time recognize students and staff of the 4-H program who are gearing up for competing at the state level. By proclamation, the board honored several students and staff members who qualified in June for state and regional programs. We got this honor from Director of Communications and Community Relations today:
****DOUGLAS COUNTY HONORS LOCAL 4-H YOUTH COMPETING AT STATE AND REGIONAL COMPETITIONS****
The Douglas County Board of Commissioners recently honored by proclamation several employees and youth from Douglas County 4-H who have been busy preparing for State and Regional Competitions.
Ten members of the 4-H Club qualified for summer competitions. Several 4-H members competed in a public speaking competition last March against students from thirty-nine Northwest Georgia counties, and six qualified to move on to the State competition in their project areas. Each will present a twelve minute demonstration on the topic of their choice to a panel of judges along with a personal interview of their subject matter. The Douglas County State Congress delegates are:
- Kayla Jaconette – Human Development,
- Victoria Williams – Safety,
- Sam Hopkins – Festive Foods for Health,
- Kathryn Tackett – History,
- Makayla Moore – Family & Resource Management, and
- Maya Davenport – General Recreation.
In June, the 4-H Horse Club sent twelve members to the State 4-H Horse Show in Perry, Georgia.  Three members placed in the top five of their Division to represent Georgia in the Southeast Regional Competition:
- Elaine Berg – Stock Seat (Western) Division,
- Erin Stewart – Hunt Seat Division, and
- Kelsey Smith – double qualified in both Stock Seat and Hunt Seat Divisions.
The Mission of Georgia 4-H is to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. This Mission is accomplished through “hands on” learning experiences focused on agricultural and environmental issues, agriculture awareness, leadership, communication skills, foods and nutrition, health, energy conservation, and citizenship. For more information about the community clubs and opportunities in Douglas County 4-H please contact the Extension Office at 770-920-7224 or visit http://www.caes.uga.edu/extension/douglas/4H/index.html
