One of our city’s biggest annual festivals happens every late spring, the Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival. We got the schedule from the county a few weeks back and with the festival about to begin, we wanted to share one of the events and schedule with you, the Flower show!
*****BUDS ARE POPPING UP! GET THOSE FLOWERS READY FOR THE HYDRANGEA FESTIVAL!*****
Spring has arrived! Plants and flowers are beginning to bud and bloom. Douglas County gardeners are working their flower beds in anticipation of the 9th annual Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival on June 4th – 5th.
The Festival’s Near Standard Flower Show is one of the highlights of the weekend, and entries into the Show are open to anyone with no entry fee required. The Standard Flower Show is organized and sponsored by the Ama-Kanasta Garden Club, the Sweetwater Garden Club, and the Town and Country Garden Club of Douglas County, all members of Dogwood District VI, The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., Deep South Region and National Garden Clubs, Inc. The Standard Flower Show is co-sponsored by the Douglas County Master Gardeners Association, and is held in the Atrium of the Douglas County Courthouse, 8700 Hospital Drive.
“America, the Beautiful!” is the selected theme for the Standard Flower Show as it appropriately reflects the Festival’s purpose of fun, and represents the theme Hydrangea, ‘Blue Wave’.
- The Horticulture Division of the Standard Flower Show will feature entries in 67 classes of flowers, shrubs, trees, ferns, herbs and more. Over 500 horticulture entries are anticipated.
- The Design Division will feature table and tray designs with floral pieces in 6 classes, and will celebrate American holidays.
- The Standard Flower Show will also feature Special Exhibits, including a Youth Design Division with entries interpreting phrases from the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational exhibits will include an exhibit on the Blue Star Memorial Highway markers, and one on the landscape design process for the new Military Honor Garden at Hunter Park.
- There will also be 3 classes of Artistic Crafts where entrants will decorate Red Flyer wagons, trophies, and cowgirl hats!
Rules, regulations and details about the Standard Flower Show can be found on the Festival web site at www.PennyMcHenryHydrangeaFestival.com.
The Near Standard Flower Show is one of the numerous Festival activities that also include miniature gardens; original scarecrows in the Master Gardeners’ vegetable garden; tours of private gardens; the Hydrangea 5K run; a juried festival marketplace, art exhibits, and much more.
