Taking an innovative approach has always been the hallmark of the Carrollton City Schools School Nutrition program, and once again, the methodology was noticed.

As a Georgia Grown District of Distinction, School Nutrition Director Dr. Linette Dodson and her team were invited to the 15th anniversary celebration of HealthMPowers, an initiative that focuses on supporting the collective efforts of public and private sector partners working together for the betterment of children’s health.

The celebration, held at Emory University Sept. 8, featured Taste of Health, a showcase of Georgia Grown Test Kitchen recipes that includes a kale and blueberry salad created by Carrollton City Schools. Carole Thrower, Carrollton High School’s cafeteria manager and head “chef,” prepared the recipe on site for about 150 leaders from foundations, non-profits, corporations and government agencies that work together to support the health of Georgia’s children.

“The Kale & Blueberry Salad with Homemade Vinaigrette Dressing contains locally grown kale and blueberries and is one of our favorite Georgia grown salad recipes in the district,” said Dodson.

Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and state Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black attended the event in support of a state goal to have 20 percent of school meals featuring Georgia grown ingredients by 2020.

Carrollton, along with Clark County and Bibb County systems, are the only Georgia Grown Districts of Distinction in the state. Carrollton also boasts designations as Healthier US School Challenge schools & Alliance for a Healthier Generation District and is a Golden Radish recipient, all awarded for exceptional programming, promotion and participation.
