Dill To Serve On State Charter Commission

Carrollton High School Culinary Arts teacher Carmen Dill has been named to the State Charter Schools Commission of Georgia, a state-level, independent charter school authorizing entity. Appointed to fill an unexpired term by Gov. Nathan Deal, she attended her first meeting Aug. 30 and will continue service on the commission through January 2019.

The commission has the power to approve or deny petitions for commission charter schools and renew, non-renew, or terminate commission charter school petitions in accordance with Georgia law.

“I am truly honored to serve on this important state board,” said Dill. “As a teacher, I understand the importance of providing a quality education to all children and welcome the opportunity to serve.”

While the commission’s duties are set forth in law and extend beyond simply authorizing schools, the commission’s principal obligations include reviewing charter school petitions for commission charter schools and assisting in the establishment of commission charter schools throughout Georgia; developing and promoting best practices for charter schools and charter school cosponsors in order to ensure that high-quality charter schools are developed and encouraged; promoting high standards of accountability for commission charter schools; and monitoring and annually reviewing the academic and financial performance of commission charter schools and holding the schools accountable for their performance pursuant to the charter.

Dill is in her first year as the Culinary Arts teacher at CHS. Previously, she was a second grade teacher and paraprofessional. She also taught a variety of Family and Consumer Science courses and coached cheerleading. Prior to earning her teaching certificate, Mrs. Dill worked as a Tech Prep/School-to-Work coordinator. Along with several team members, she presented at multiple conferences on best practices as it relates to business, secondary and postsecondary partnerships. She is a member of the Association for Career and Technical Education and she and her husband had the privilege of being members of the Leadership Georgia Class of 2013 and served as program chairs in 2014.

“Mrs. Dill has a passion for education and seeking new ways to help students become successful,” said David Brooks, CHS principal. “Her past experiences and emphasis on technical education not only serve us well here at Carrollton High School, but will serve as great experience on the charter commission.”

Dill earned her bachelor of science degree in Family and Consumer Science from the University of Georgia. She resides in Carrollton with her husband of 20 years, Brian Dill, and their son, Mason, who is a sophomore at CHS.
