Carroll Electric Membership Cooperative hosted its annual National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Day February 21. More than 300 students from FFA chapters at Bowdon, Central, Haralson County, Heard County, Mount Zion, Temple and Pepperell High Schools attended the event to commemorate National FFA Week.
This year, students visited four agriculture related stations at the Carroll EMC main office. The FFA students viewed a presentation about the use of drones in agriculture, beekeeping 101, a high voltage demo and an information session about scholarships and opportunities for students. The attendees left each session with more knowledge about agriculture, Carroll EMC and how these industries can impact their future. Paulding County High School junior, Chloe Moody, found the session to educational as well as eye opening.
“It was very informative to see how agriculture touches every aspect of the career fields at Carroll EMC, from the linemen to scholarships,” said Moody. “Attending FFA Day broadens your spectrum on what’s available to you when you graduate and go off to college.”
In addition to the sessions, the event closed with guest speaker Blake Poole. Poole was the former Director of Association Services with the Georgia Cattlemen’s Association and recently started at the Georgia Secretary of State’s office as a Regional Manager. He spoke to the students about how to be successful and the importance of getting out of one’s comfort zone.
“The biggest thing about going through FFA and 4-H is that it teaches you to be bold and courageous,” said Poole. “If you’re not bold and courageous and you don’t take that step outside your comfort zone, you are never going to grow in life. The biggest thing in life that we should do is push ourselves. You’ve got be willing to push yourself to the next level.”
