Billy Bob’s Bar-B-Q has a menu that is sure to delight any fan of classic American food. With over 20 years of experience and numerous family recipes, Billy Bob’s takes Texas barbecue and gives it a twist of southern hospitality. “We opened Billy Bob’s in October 1997,” said owner Bill Green. “We’ve been in business for almost 22 years. My father and I for several years talked about opening a restaurant, and right away we knew we wanted it to be barbecue along with southern home cooking and whatever else we came up with along the way. And boy did we come up with some good recipes, some fell right into our laps like when we hired two brothers from Louisiana that had evacuated here during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 who gave us our authentic Cajun recipes. We knew we wanted to have a restaurant in Carrollton, so when an opportunity came along to buy what was Jones Barbecue at the time, we jumped on it. We are truly a family owned business with my father, Bob along with myself and my mother, Beverly and my wife LeAnne all work here. The first two years was one heck of a learning experience, especially when you are in business with your family. Once we made it past year five, and we were still a family, we knew we were blessed and we had something special. It still wasn’t easy and never has been. If it were easy, everyone would have a restaurant!”
Billy Bob’s is focused on being a family-friendly, family-owned restaurant, and they have stuck to those core values since the day they opened their doors. “My father grew up in Bowdon. He was an awesome football player and went to UGA on a full-ride football scholarship,” said Green. “After he graduated, he married my mother, whom he met while in Athens, and they moved back to Carrollton in 1964–where my sister and I were born. We moved away in 1972 when my dad took a new job in Texas, where I grew up and where barbecue is huge. We visited our families in Carroll County and Athens every year during the summer and at Christmas through the 1970s and the 1980s. Even though we loved Texas, we always wanted to move back to Georgia, and we did in 1990.”
The Green’s opened the business, and immediately things took off. “In 1997 there weren’t 130-plus eating establishments like there are today, so we really got run over when people saw we were a new barbecue restaurant that had bought out Jones. For a while it was pandemonium. We said to ourselves, ‘What did we get into?’ But once we worked out all the kinks and got multitudes of compliments and well wishes, it was definitely worth it. We have always prided ourselves on good food and good service. We still today have a lot of customers who have eaten with us since year one, and we can’t thank them and all of our customers enough who have entered through these doors and spent their hard-earned money with us. God bless you!”
All of the food at Billy Bob’s is authentic and tasty, but for a first time diner the beef brisket should be strongly considered. “Growing up in Texas, I was raised on beef brisket,” said Green. “That’s barbecue in the Lone Star State. When cooked right, it’s fantastic! It’s our favorite, and we were the first restaurant in Carrollton to serve beef brisket. It was an instant hit. Even though we serve more pork, our brisket has become very popular. Other specialties are our ribeye steaks, fresh hand-patted certified angus hamburgers, hand-battered chicken tenders, home-cooked vegetables, catfish, fried shrimp, barbecue egg rolls, barbecue salad (pork or beef), and for dessert, our homemade banana pudding. Billy Bob’s serves a daily lunch special with one meat and two veggies, bread and drink for $8.99.
We have been awarded many accolades over the years with our food. We’ve won best BBQ 15 times in 21 years, best hamburger five times, best banana pudding, and best caterer two times. We have even had Buck Lanford with FOX5 Good Day Atlanta call us after hearing from a sports writer about how good our burgers are and he came out to do a story about it on his Burgers with Buck segment in 2016. After it aired, we had our busiest year to date.” Click here to see the FOX5 special.
Green encourages everybody to pick Billy Bob’s for their next meal, family gathering, corporate event or backyard cookout. “Catering has also been a big part of our business,” said Green. “We offer affordable catering for any and all events from 25 people to 1500 people. You can have a full meal catered with drink and dessert for between $11-18 per person. Or you can have a full meal for pick-up for around $7-10 per person. Prices vary depending on what you choose. We would love to provide you with a great meal and quality service.”
