Contractors for the Georgia Dept. of Transportation (GDOT) will flag traffic on SR 70/92/154 near SR 166/Duncan Memorial Hwy this weekend to continue construction activities related to the SR 166 at Roundabout intersection improvement project in Douglas County.
Weather permitting, flaggers will direct traffic through a single daytime lane closure on southbound SR 70/92/154 on Saturday, July 27. The closures are needed to allow crews to safety place a storm drain pipe on the roadway.
This work is part of construction of a roundabout in this area. This roundabout project is designed to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes at the intersection. The existing three-legged intersection has stop or yield traffic control, and a significant percentage of crashes in the area have been related to angle collisions. National studies have shown that the installation of a roundabout results in nearly 80% reduction in fatal and serious injury crashes.
Motorists should remain alert during this change and watch carefully for detour and directional signage, workers and equipment in the roadway. Some traffic delays may occur as drivers navigate the new road configurations. This project is scheduled for completion in late fall 2019.
As always, motorists traveling in the area are reminded to reduce their speeds in the work zone. Motorists are also encouraged to wear seatbelts, eliminate distractions behind the wheel, and plan their routes before getting on the road by calling 511 for real-time information on work status and traffic conditions.
