Set in the desert 2,000 years ago, Carrollton Center for the Arts’ English-language operatic production of Amahl and the Night Visitors presents a unique perspective on the story at the heart of the Christmas season.
“The story has a universal message of kindness, community and forgiveness,” said Carrollton Arts Superintendent Tim Chapman. “Let the message of holidays be reflected in this beautiful piece of music and drama.”
The production’s cast is comprised of University of West Georgia music majors and singers from the community, working together under the direction of UWG’s Dr. Dawn Neely.
“Amahl was originally commissioned by NBC to be a live TV broadcast on Christmas Eve, 1951,” said Neely. “Its wonderful message resonated with people and this American opera became a regular broadcast every Christmas Eve for many years.”
Amahl’s composer, Gian Carlo Menotti, told the tale of the Magi from his childhood holiday tradition. Amahl learns about charity, mercy, faith and hope in the span of a single night when he and his mother find themselves unexpected hosts of a group of kings on their way to honor a baby in Bethlehem.
