The Carroll County Community Chorus’ Christmas in Carrollton concert, at the Carrollton Center for the Arts, December 13-14, combines locally-requested songs and new selections to create a celebration of the season uniquely tailored to the community.
“A lot of people around town stop me to ask, ‘Are you going to do this one or this one?’” said the chorus’ conductor, Jack Gantt. “Everybody has their favorites. We try to work in familiar things and then about half of the program is new material.”
Gantt said the chorus’s arrangement of “Oh Holy Night” has remained one of the group’s most requested songs, so it is included every year. “Christmas with Mozart,” “Christmas at the Movies,” “Yule Be Swinging” and classical favorites such as “Believe,” “In Excelsis Deo” and the “Hallelujah Chorus” are also on the set list for this year’s show.
During the chorus’ performance of “Go Light Your World,” the entire choir will come off their platform and circulate through the audience with battery-powered candles. Gantt says this addition to the show goes beyond stagecraft.
“We’re dealing with an awful lot in the world right now,” he said. “This is our way of making a statement that we need to think about shining the light.”
“This is the type of show that is both nostalgic and contemporary.,” said Carrollton Arts Superintendent Tim Chapman. “The concert always includes those favorite standards that complete your holiday experience while at the same time introducing the audience to new selections that celebrate the season. It’s a perfect event for the entire family.“
