The University of West Georgia has modified the Fall 2020 academic calendar in preparation for the upcoming semester, prioritizing the health and safety of the campus community to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
UWG will begin the semester on Wednesday, Aug. 12, as scheduled, and end regular instruction on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Final exams will be administered remotely so that students do not have to return to campus after Thanksgiving break. However, students are welcome to return to campus, as residence halls and DineWest facilities will remain operational through the week of final exams.
“We are excited to offer the full, dynamic experience our students need,” said UWG President Dr. Brendan B. Kelly. “The modified calendar presents new opportunities for our campus to demonstrate our instructional innovation and commitment to our mission as we prepare for challenges both known and unknown.”
Most classes will meet remotely during the previously scheduled Fall Break (Oct. 8-9) and the first three days of Thanksgiving week (Nov. 23-25). The university will administer final exams remotely from Nov. 30 through Dec. 5. Fall commencement ceremonies are planned for Saturday, Dec. 12.
Key dates for the semester include:
- Aug. 12: Classes begin
- Sept. 7: Labor Day holiday
- Oct. 8-9: Fall Break is suspended; most classes will meet remotely
- Nov. 23-25: most classes will meet remotely on these three days of Thanksgiving week
- Nov. 26-27: Thanksgiving Break
- Nov. 30 through Dec. 5: Final exams delivered remotely
The academic calendar adjustments are part of the university’s comprehensive Return to Campus plan, developed by cross-divisional working groups to facilitate a successful transition back to campus for students, faculty and staff.
