UPDATED: UWG to Host 13th Annual MLK Celebration, Other area events planned

UWG to host 13th annual MLK Celebration on Tuesday, January 18, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the UWG Campus Center Ballroom 108. CEO of the Jackson Foundation and Museum, Ms. Jawana Jackson will speak and share stories of her time with him. This year’s annual celebration is open to the community.

The Carrollton MLK Coalition has rescheduled the 29th annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Ecumenical service from January 16 to January 23, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. City Station 

Wreath Laying Ceremony – Monday, January 17 – at MLK Monument in Downtown Carrollton @ 12:00 p.m.

Dear Martin Luther King Parade Volunteers and Participants, As directed by Mr. Derrick Johnson, President & CEO of the NAACP, I am regretfully informing you the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade 2022 is definitively postponed until a later date. This decision was made in the light of the alarming rapid spread of the (COVID-19) OMICRON VARIANT, in addition the decision was made to close all NAACP offices until further notice. The NAACP most important concern has been to promote the health and safety of employees, members, volunteers, and event participants. As a Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade volunteer or participant we deeply value you and thank you for your willingness to keep the dream alive. However, during this time of global/national health concern we must stay vigilant and heed all warnings of the CDC and government authorities and take paramount precautions to make certain that you and your family are healthy and safe.However, everyone is encouraged to remember the celebration of Dr. King’s life and legacy exceeds a parade-it’s about SERVICE! The contactless Day of Service “Kindness Kits” Donation Drop -Off will take place at it’s scheduled date, time, and location ( Monday January 17th, 2022—11:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m.—Moore’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 120 N. Sam Gentry is a lifelong resident of Carroll County, Georgia. In August of 2007, while enrolled at the University of West Georgia, Sam worked at University Communications and Marketing for two semesters as a student assistant. He began writing for a local newspaper that same year. After graduating from UWG in 2010, Sam continued working for the same paper, where he made his way through the ranks, eventually becoming General Manager in 2017. Sam joined the UCM team again in January of 2020 where he serves as Manager of Media Relations. Besides being a liaison to media outlets, Sam’s writing efforts are focused on the Richards College of Business. In his free time, Sam enjoys writing songs, woodworking, and traveling with his wife, Becky, and four children: Samantha, Will, Audrey, and Gracie.
