The City of LaGrange will host its annual Arbor Day Celebration Friday, February 24th at 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of Murphy Avenue and Hunnicutt Avenue in LaGrange.
There will be an annual tree planting and a short program. The trees were purchased by members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Theta Xi Omega Chapter, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity as part of their service project to the community.
“The environment is extremely important to all of us and we, the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Theta Xi Omega Chapter, consider it an honor to partner with the gentlemen of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in this year’s Arbor Day celebration,” said Dr. Lorraine Jackson, President of Theta Xi Omega Chapter.
The Sorority’s international program of service theme is “Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood” and has one foundation and five Initiatives, which include “Enhance our Environment”. Therefore, the local chapter is committed to collaborating with organizations and supporting programs like the “Tree City USA Program.”
“There are many benefits of having trees in our environment. Trees help clean pollutants like carbon dioxide out of the air, which helps slow down gas buildup in the atmosphere. Trees also improve water quality, reduce flooding and help control the climate along with many other benefits. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. strives to improve the lives of those we serve, and “Enhance Our Environment” is one of our 5 program initiatives designed to do just that,” said LaTonya Young chair for Enhance Our Environment, Theta Xi Omega Chapter.
“It is indeed an honor to participate each year in the annual tree planting celebration in reference to Arbor Day hosted by the City of LaGrange,” said Alton West, the City of LaGrange Community Development Director. “To watch a tree grow from the small 2” caliber to the massive size many of the previous years planted is remarkable. When one understands the significance of trees, I should encourage all to ‘plant a tree’ and care for them, due to the many benefits they provide to the ecosystem. To be able to represent the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Theta Nu Lambda Chapter seated here in LaGrange is a privilege and a way to give back to the community.”
Arbor Day is a holiday that encourages everyone to plant and care for trees. The City of LaGrange has been recognized as a Tree City USA Community for more than 16 years.
