Visit LaGrange and the Troup County Archives are hosting Family History and Heritage Day Saturday, July 29th, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This unique occasion aims to unite the community in preserving and expanding the archives while celebrating the shared history and heritage of the community.
Family History & Heritage Day invites individuals of all ages to delve into the treasures of their family’s past. Whether it’s a cherished family Bible, news articles documenting ancestral milestones, funeral programs, photographs, birth and death records, diaries, obituaries, drawings, oral histories, or nostalgic stories passed down through generations, this event provides an opportunity to explore and showcase these invaluable artifacts.
The main objective of the event is to create digital copies of these historical treasures, ensuring their preservation for future generations. By collaborating with experienced archivists and dedicated volunteers, attendees will have the chance to make copies of their family records, ensuring their safekeeping and contributing to the expansion of Troup County Archives.
One significant focus of Family History & Heritage Day is the Mulberry Street Cemetery revitalization project. This historic cemetery, the resting place of nearly 800 individuals, mostly unrecorded African Americans, holds a rich cultural significance for the community. Troup County Archives is particularly interested in uncovering more information about the individuals laid to rest there and invites attendees to bring any ancestry information they possess, including names, birth dates and places, death dates and places, and more. Expert staff will be on hand to offer assistance, answer questions, and help overcome genealogical research challenges.
