Bremen City Schools held their monthly board meeting earlier this week to recognize a student athlete’s accomplishments and to give updates on various departments’ preparations for the upcoming school year.
Student Marley Derringer was recognized as a two-time state champion high jumper and also for receiving the Bob Fowler Award for setting the new 3A state record in high jump.
Director of Student Services and Support Silas Brown is working on a few projects to prepare for the upcoming school year including processes and procedures for the new social worker position and transportation. He attended GaDOE Federal Programs Conference in Atlanta, which Director of Special Programs Bill Garrett also attended, and GASROE Safety Conference with School Resource Officer Casey Vann. Garrett has completed Title IX surveys and post-school outcomes for special education students. He is also working on a few other projects to prepare for the beginning of the school year while transitioning from the BOE offices to an office at the high school.
Brian Wheeler, director of technology, is preparing chromebooks, projectors, network, and the new-hire technology for the start of the year. New cybersecurity devices are being set up as are security programs funded by the round three grant.
A grace period for free and reduced lunches will carry over until September 13, according to Director of School Nutrition Jess Peaden.
BCS has acquired many new hires over the past few months. They will host an orientation for these employees on July 24.
Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training is coming up. Jones Elementary teachers will begin their second year of training. By the end of the 2024-2025 school year most JES teachers will be both fully trained and fully compliant with HB538. Bremen Academy teachers will begin their first year of training. This will ensure all elementary teachers are trained in the fundamentals of the science of reading research. The Rural Education Funds are being used to train the teachers.
Director of Facilities Russell Cooper gave an update on maintenance across the district. His team is wrapping up summer cleaning and getting all the new-hire keys ready. HVAC filter changes will occur in two weeks. and the canopy post at JES is being painted. A new entrance from the stadium will be installed to the building.
Lastly, campus walks will be conducted next week to ensure everything is ready for school to start.
