On a typical breakfast platter Chad and Cheri Taylor slather homemade gravy on massive biscuits, fill a bowl with delicious grits, and place sizzling bacon on ceramic plates for hungry guests.
Buchanan locals don’t have to wait long for breakfast or brunch to dig into a delicious meal that both satisfies and nourishes. The couple secured the building located on Business Highway 27 in Buchanan this past spring and have transformed its interior from chaos and rubble to a cute and comfortable morning hangout spot.
The homemade breakfasts cooked lovingly by his grandmother , Ruby, the restaurant’s namesake, still linger in Chad’s mind decades later. He remembers how even in the dead of winter, her breakfasts inspired him to get moving.
“Her house didn’t have heat, so I would bundle up in an electric blanket at night,” he shares. “But as soon as I smelled that food, I’d come running!”
Mama Ruby’s meals were labors of love, and Chad cherishes and reproduces that in his meals at Mama Ruby’s. From updating the building to establishing a base menu, he and his wife Cheri, honor Ruby through their thoroughness and integrity.
“It’s important to us to not cut corners,” Chad emphasizes. That’s why we don’t use canned or packaged anything.
Veggies are fresh, breakfast is cooked to order, and biscuits are made from scratch on the spot. It’s a lot of work, but I love making people happy.”
The location of their restaurant had been the home of so many businesses in years past, but one that stood out to the Taylors was Gwen’s, which also served country breakfasts. Out of all the other eateries that existed in that building, Gwen’s lasted over twenty years, and through some conversations with other locals, the Taylors discovered that many wanted an establishment like hers back. As it happens, the Taylors are friends of Gwen’s, and she herself has been a source of inspiration and encouragement for the couple.
Since opening the restaurant in early June this year, the Taylors already have fans raving about their cooking; and they hope to bring in more guests with the mobile ordering software they are setting up. Soon those who need a wholesome bite to eat in a hurry can order their meal online and pick it up in as fast as fifteen minutes! Be on the lookout for this new addition in the coming weeks by following them on Facebook or Instagram.
“We are incredibly grateful and thankful for everyone who shares a meal with us!” Cheri beams.
