Bremen Board of Education Reviews Financials, Personnel Changes at February Meeting

The Bremen Board of Education held its regular session on Monday and unanimously approved the meeting agenda before proceeding with financial reports and personnel actions. Director of Finance Allen Pullen presented a financial update detailing local tax collections and SPLOST revenue from Haralson and Carroll Counties, which totaled $299,021.59. Pullen reported that local taxes levied for Bremen City Schools in 2024 amounted to $5,638,482, with $950,310 collected in January. So far, $4,478,290, or 96.3% of the levy, has been collected, including $318,240 from the state’s 2023 Homeowner’s Tax Relief. Additionally, the district has budgeted $500,000 in Title Ad Valorem Taxes for FY25, with $49,473 collected in January, bringing the total to $271,243, or 54.2% of the anticipated revenue. Following the financial update, the board unanimously approved the January finance reports.

The board also approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from multiple meetings, including hearings and votes related to HB 581. District leaders submitted written reports, including Superintendent Zoe Evans, Assistant Superintendent Silas Brown, and directors overseeing student support, school nutrition, facilities, technology, and extracurricular programs. The district’s current enrollment is at 2,339 students, with 745 at Bremen High School, 504 at Bremen Middle School, 339 at Bremen Academy, and 751 at Jones Elementary School. Several individuals were recognized during the meeting for their achievements. Eighth-grade student Levi Edge was named the Bremen City Schools System Spelling Bee Champion. Additionally, Bremen Middle School educators received grants from the Bremen Educational Foundation and Carroll EMC’s Bright Ideas program.

The board approved several personnel changes, including upcoming retirements and new hires. Retirements effective in the summer of 2025 include Pam Armas (Bremen High School), Pam Coats (Bremen Middle School), Toni Lovvorn (Jones Elementary School), Donna McBrayer (Bremen Middle School), and Jenny Pate (Bremen High School). New hires approved by the board include Baxlee Benefield and Alicia Viera as after-school program workers, Alexis Phelps as a cafeteria substitute, Joel McLeroy as a bus driver substitute, and Rachel Rayburn as a substitute teacher for Jones Elementary and Bremen Academy.
