Arts Center Presents Pair of C.S. Lewis Events

Two events at the Carrollton Center for the Arts September 5 offer a glimpse inside the life and mind of one of the 20th Century’s most remarkable literary figures.

In the one-person play, An Evening with C.S. Lewis, actor-writer-director David Payne embodies the late British author of The Chronicles of NarniaThe Screwtape Letters and The Space Trilogy.

Set in 1963, the production joins Lewis as he hosts a group of American writers at his home in Oxford. He recalls the people and events that inspired his creativity and shaped his life, his friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien, why he nearly abandoned the Narnia Chronicles, how he embraces Christianity and of the American woman who turned his life upside down.

“I remember reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in school,” said Arts Center Manager Tim Chapman. “It was one of those pieces of literature that transported you to a different world, full of adventure and filled with interesting characters. Join us to hear how Mr. Lewis mastered his literary works and about the people in his life.”

The arts center will also host a Visiting Author Series luncheon and program, Deeper Magic, The Theology Behind the Writings of C.S. Lewis, from 12pm – 2pm that day. Dr. Donald Williams is an ordained minister, professor emeritus of Toccoa Falls College and past president of the International Society of Christian Apologetics. He has trained local pastors for Church Planting International in places like Uganda, Kenya and India. He stays permanently camped out on the borders between theology and literature, serious scholarship and pastoral ministry, Narnia and Middle-Earth. He is the author of 15 books, including Deeper Magic, The Theology Behind the Writings of C.S. Lewis, which he will discuss at the luncheon. Admission to the luncheon is $35. Carrollton Writers Guild Members will receive a five dollar discount on tickets.

An Evening with C.S. Lewis is sponsored by the Cole Family Foundation.

Tickets for An Evening with C.S. Lewis are $18, $10 for 12 and younger and are available online at carrolltonarts.com, by phone at 770-838-1083 and at the center’s box office at 251 Alabama Street in Carrollton.
