The Bremen Board of Education met Monday night to review district finances, approve personnel actions, and formally support proposed legislation for senior school tax relief at its regular February meeting.
After the meeting was called to order, the board unanimously approved the January financial reports presented by Director of Finance Allen Pullen. The report included an overview of local ad valorem tax collections and SPLOST revenues from Haralson and Carroll counties, totaling $307,866.72 for the month. Local taxes budgeted for Bremen City Schools total $6,393,138, with $157,386 collected in January and $563,145 collected year-to-date, representing 8.8 percent of the budget. The district has collected 48.3% of its anticipated FY26 Title Ad Valorem Tax revenue. As part of the consent agenda, the Board unanimously approved a resolution supporting proposed legislation to provide senior school tax relief. The measure would increase the Bremen City School District homestead exemption for residents 65 and older from $10,000 to $90,000 of assessed home value, provided the resident has paid Bremen City School District ad valorem taxes on a homestead property for at least five consecutive years before eligibility.
The resolution recognizes the leadership of Sen. Tim Bearden and Rep. Tyler Paul Smith for working with local officials to consider legislation that balances taxpayer equity with the long-term financial stability of Bremen City Schools. According to supporting documentation presented to the Board, recent commercial and industrial growth in Bremen has strengthened the local tax digest, creating an opportunity to provide targeted tax relief for seniors without shifting additional burden onto younger residential property owners. If introduced and approved by the Georgia General Assembly, the measure would require voter approval through a local referendum before taking effect.
The consent agenda also included approval of minutes from the January 12, 2026, meeting, revisions to Board Policy IFBGE: Internet Safety for public review, the FY30 Local Facility Plan Renewal, multiple facility requests, and several contract and agreement approvals. The Board approved several personnel actions, including retirements, resignations, leave requests, and new hires. The Board also approved multiple certified personnel recommendations for the 2026-2027 school year.
