Villa Rica Lions Club and Georgia Parents of Blind Children Host Successful Braille Book Fair

The Villa Rica Lions Club, in partnership with Georgia Parents of Blind Children, proudly hosted a Braille Book Fair at the Villa Rica Public Library on Saturday, February 28. The event welcomed children and families from multiple counties across Georgia, along with Teachers of the Visually Impaired and other professionals who assist children with visual impairments from Carroll County, Douglas County, Henry County, and Alabama.

With more than 700 Braille books available—from early readers to adult titles—participants were able to select from a wide variety of engaging and accessible reading materials. The goal of the event was not only to provide books, but to foster literacy, independence, and meaningful connections within the blind and visually impaired community.

Members of the Villa Rica Lions Club provided lunch for attendees and had volunteers on hand to assist children in selecting books tailored to their interests and reading levels. West Georgia Family Dentistry generously donated cookies and toothbrushes for families, while Goldbrickers brought LEGO sets for children to enjoy during the event.

Families also had access to valuable community resources and information from:

  • National Federation of the Blind
  • Georgia Council of the Blind
  • Georgia Library Services for the Blind and Print Disabled

“We were thrilled to see families come together from across the region to celebrate Braille literacy,” said Stacey Orr, President of the Villa Rica Lions Club. “Access to books is life-changing. Seeing children excited about reading and connecting with others in the blind community reminds us why we serve.”

Katie Nix of Georgia Parents of Blind Children added, “Events like this ensure that families know they are not alone. Providing access to Braille books and trusted resources empowers both children and parents. The connections made here are just as important as the books that went home.”

Children of all ages attended the fair, representing communities across Georgia. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between service organizations, families, educators, and local businesses in supporting literacy and accessibility.

Braille books are still available for children and adults in the community. For more information about obtaining Braille books or learning more about the Villa Rica Lions Club, please visit the organization on Facebook or email [email protected].
